Bioventus Recognizes Dr. Peter Heeckt for His Work as Chief Medical Officer

For more than six years, Dr. Peter Heeckt, served as the Chief Medical Officer of Bioventus. To say that Peter has made a real difference while at Bioventus would be an understatement. He has been a patient advocate ensuring the company stayed focused on our mission of helping people resume and enjoy active lives.

A short list of his work during his tenure includes:

  • Being a key member of numerous advisory boards for Bioventus
  • Direct involvement in clinical trial design & execution
  • Medical Affairs Information Letters (MAIL )program oversight and involvement to ensure Health Care Providers have access to the most complete information on the use of our products
  • Kick-started our publication strategy process

Peter has also been instrumental on the Market Access front where he works to ensure patients have access to Bioventus products. He did this in many ways including: meeting with health insurance plans, meeting with Health Technology Assessment organizations, providing advice to Market Access, and representing Bioventus on a committee to engage the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons to revise their negative recommendations for hyaluronic acid products to treat knee osteoarthritis.

Always available to help his colleagues, Peter also taught many at Bioventus about our products and patient care.

Another side to Peter many don’t see is in his efforts to give back, specifically around an initiative called Operation Walk.

“Peter and his wife, Tanja, have been great supporters of Operation Walk Canada and our medical missions to Guatemala and Ecuador since 2006, “ said Dr. Bob Bourne, Operation Walk co-founder. “Their mentorship and contributions as volunteers are legendary, Peter as an assistant in the operating room and Tanja as an interpreter. Both have provided great leadership in all our missions. Peter and Tanja have volunteered on all ten Operation Walk-Ecuador medical missions and will be joining us again in 2020.”

While we thank him for his work, we are not saying goodbye. Peter is not retiring, but his role has changed and we will see less of him. He will now act as a medical consultant for Bioventus and continue working with our current CMO, Dr. Peter Shaw.

Peter is given the Tree of Andry by Alessandra Pavaseio and Mark Harbaugh.

While transitioning into his new role, Peter Heeckt reflected on his time as CMO.

“I always loved being part of the worldwide Bioventus family. Besides my work in medical affairs, clinical studies and market access, I particularly enjoyed directly assisting our sales force in their often technically and clinically very demanding interactions with physicians and patients,” said Peter. “Happy to have contributed to Bioventus’ success over many years, I firmly believe we are on the right way towards becoming the true global leader in orthobiologics. I’ll be watching this from a distance, always ready to help when needed!”
